How to Set Up a Mobile Plan and Home Internet Without the Headache
A practical comparison guide for choosing an Australian mobile plan and home internet, covering coverage, contracts, data, devices, costs and safer switching.

A local phone number and reliable internet quickly become part of work, study, banking, transport and staying close to family. Unfortunately, choosing a plan can feel like comparing twenty varieties of rice while someone keeps moving the price labels.
The simplest approach is to define what you need, compare the total cost and read the plan summary. Do not sign under time pressure and never share identity documents until you have verified the provider and channel.
List your real usage before looking at deals
Estimate mobile data, calls to Sri Lanka, hotspot use, video meetings, streaming, gaming and the number of people using home internet. Include where you commute or travel. The cheapest plan is not cheap if it fails in your suburb or runs out of data during every class.
Prepaid or postpaid?
Prepaid can be useful when you want firm spending limits, a shorter commitment or a simple first plan. Postpaid may offer different inclusions or device arrangements, but can involve billing cycles, credit checks or minimum terms.
Neither is automatically better. Compare like with like: the same data period, call inclusions, speed limits, expiry rules and setup costs.
Check coverage where life actually happens
Most Australian mobile providers use one of the major underlying networks, but coverage and access can differ. Check provider maps for home, campus, work and regular travel. Ask neighbours or classmates about real indoor reception while remembering that building materials and devices affect results.
The ACMA recommends checking network coverage and whether your device will work, including support for calls to Triple Zero.
